A blockbuster Cheval Blanc and probably the greatest Cheval Blanc made during the sixties and seventies, this wine still has a dense, murky garnet color and knock-out aromatics of coffee, black fruit, and spice box. The wine is opulent and fleshy with enormous glycerin and power. It is still very muscular, also with slightly robust tannins to shed, but this wine seems almost immortal in terms of longevity. My best guess is that, from pristinely stored bottles, this wine is still in late adolescence and not yet at its peak of maturity. Anticipated maturity: Now-2025.
At its best, Cheval challenges Château Latour for wine of the vintage in 1964. This bottle was delicious, fragrant and deep, with floral, spicy, berry and chocolate flavors, complex and long. Drink now.
Rene Gabriel rates this wine 18/20 points.
