André Kunz: Concentrated, velvety, complex, fresh, elegant, deep bouquet, cherry jelly, cassis, strawberries, Bounty, mint, cedar, delicate graphite. In the mouth concentrated, complex, powerful, elegant, fresh, excellent structure, lots of fine tannins, creamy black fruit, various, intense, sensational aromas, very long finish, dense, creamy, full, with lots of aftertaste aromas.
74% Merlot | 13% Cabernet Franc | 13% Cabernet Sauvignon
From a very warm and dry vintage and blending 74% Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon (each 13%) that ripened a week later, the Castello Luigi 2018 Besazio Rosso del Ticino is from 30-year-old vines cultivated on the south/southeast-facing terraces above the château. The nose is very aromatic and flattering in its ripe, sweet and delicate red fruit aromas that are intertwined with very fine toast but also calcareous fruit aromas. Round and smooth on the palate, this is a full-bodied, very elegant, refined and intense Merlot blend with a long, intense and concentrated finish that reveals perfectly ripe tannins and fine, mineral acidity. The harmonious ripeness and staggering sweet fruit aromas are not really my personal cup of tea, but neither is the Masseto. However, the Besazio Rosso is concentrated and vital, has perfectly ripe and finely grained tannins and will go a long distance. It is a superb red wine that has an iconic status in Switzerland, especially in the eastern, German speaking part. 14.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. 8,700 bottles produced. Tasted in Zurich, February 2023.
