Mars' second distillery, Tsunuki, was opened in 2016 in the Kagoshima area, located in southern Japan. The distillery is hidden between two low mountains: Mount Choya (513 meters high) and Kurata (475 meters high). The water for diluting the whisky and distilling it comes straight from these two mountains. This southern part of Japan benefits from hot and very humid summers and cold winters.
The facilities built here are designed differently than at Mars' Shinshu distillery. The main difference is in the design of the stills: the wash still is onion-shaped, while the spirit still is straight. The neck of both stills is 10 degrees lower than the stills at the Shinshu distillery, making single malts from the Tsunuki distillery a heavier style than that originating from the Shinshu distillery
Tasting Notes:
Nose: The nose starts with a hint of peatsmoke. This is followed by notes of herbs and orange, which are reminiscent of a fresh cake just out of the oven!
Taste: Fruity with notes of apple. A complex bitterness keeps the whole in balance.
Finish: Long and warming with an oily finish.
