Robert Parker (92)

The premium-priced 2011 Tatay De Cristobal 1492 is pure Carménère from 17-year-old vines on sandy soils; it fermented in stainless steel with selected yeasts and matured in French oak barrels for 25 months. The nose shows a strong note of smoked paprika, very balsamic with plenty of roasted aromas of coffee and dark chocolate, over a core of ripe black berries, earth, spices and hummus, with something organic and hints of ink, quite complex. This is a complex wine (in reality it's not a varietal, it contains 10% Petit Verdot) with a powerful palate, plenty of charred flavors, persistent and still young. An XXL Carménère for powerful food and long aging in bottle. 3,337 bottles were filled in August 2013.
