Longrow 21 Years Old Limited Release 2023: A Symphony of Sherry and Bourbon Elegance

The world of whisky is often a journey through time, with each bottle telling a unique story of craftsmanship and maturation. Longrow, a distinguished distillery known for its commitment to quality and innovation, has once again captivated whisky enthusiasts with the release of the Longrow 21 Years Old Limited Edition in 2023. This exceptional expression, bottled at 46% and matured on a harmonious blend of 65% Sherry and 35% Bourbon casks, promises a sensory adventure like no other.

Aging Gracefully:

The 21-year maturation period is a testament to the patience and dedication of the master distillers at Longrow. As whisky ages, it undergoes a transformation, drawing out the rich flavors and complexities from the casks in which it resides. In the case of this limited release, the combination of Sherry and Bourbon casks ensures a symphony of flavors that dance on the palate.

Sherry Influence:

The use of Sherry casks imparts a deep and luxurious character to the Longrow 21. The 65% Sherry maturation contributes luscious notes of dried fruits, raisins, and figs. The sweetness and richness from the Sherry wood intertwine with the whisky, creating a velvety texture that coats the mouth with each sip. There's a warmth and depth that only well-aged Sherry casks can provide, elevating this expression to a level of sophistication.

Bourbon Balance:

To complement the Sherry influence, Longrow has incorporated 35% Bourbon cask maturation into this limited edition. The American oak imparts a different set of flavors, introducing elements of vanilla, honey, and a subtle hint of oak spice. The marriage of Sherry and Bourbon casks results in a harmonious balance that showcases the best of both worlds, creating a nuanced and layered whisky experience.

Tasting Notes:

The Longrow 21 Years Old Limited Release 2023 invites a sensory exploration with its complex array of flavors. On the nose, one may discover the interplay of dried fruits, vanilla, and a touch of citrus. The palate unfolds with a symphony of Sherry-driven sweetness, mingling seamlessly with the gentle warmth of Bourbon-infused spices. The finish is long-lasting, leaving a lingering memory of oak, dark chocolate, and a touch of smokiness—a signature element of Longrow whiskies.

Conclusion:

In the world of whisky, few expressions manage to capture the essence of time as eloquently as the Longrow 21 Years Old Limited Release 2023. This meticulously crafted whisky, matured on a carefully curated blend of Sherry and Bourbon casks, offers a sensory journey that is both indulgent and refined. As you savor each sip, you'll find yourself transported to the heart of the Scottish Highlands, where tradition meets innovation in a glass of liquid gold.

Whisky Notes (87)

Nose: sourness up front (lemons and grilled pineapples) which makes it lighter than expected. Some blackcurrant juice. Salty sea spray, leathery notes and muchling leaves, evolving to a somewhat dirty earthiness and oily rags. Then some toffee and polished brassware, but the sherry is never taking over the character.

Mouth: nice sooty notes along with roasted nuts and ashy smoke. Pineapples, tangerines and lemons, along with burnt thyme and hints of fish oil. Just a hint of matchsticks. Cedar wood appears, with lots of salty notes. Sour cola candy and a mildly bitter herbal side, even a subtle soapy edge.

Finish: quite long, still savoury and herbal. Walnuts, citrusy notes and moist tobacco.

I like the funky sourness and the overall sherry balance, but some other notes keep me from giving a higher mark. A fine whisky but I enjoyed other batches more. Also, the 18 Years is hard to beat.
