The Peugh Chardonnay hails from a vineyard with head-trained vines nestled in the heart of the Russian River Valley, situated on the plains that extend into the northwestern periphery of Santa Rosa. The Huichica loam, characterized by faded brown soils, provides an ideal combination of low fertility and swift drainage. What truly sets this site apart is the venerable age of the vines. While Anthill Farms may not have the precise planting date, the best estimate points to the early 1940s, making it among the state's most ancient sources of Chardonnay.
The 2021 Chardonnay Peugh Vineyard, from vines originally planted in 1887 and grafted to Chardonnay in 1944, is pure and energetic. It has soft aromas of hazelnut, toasted meringue, iodine and Meyer lemon. The light-bodied palate balances tangy acidity with a creamy, mouth-coating texture and lemon-cream flavors, and it has a long, focused finish streaked with saline character.
