Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Le nom de ce célèbre château est probablement dérivé du mot gascon "La Hite", qui signifie colline. Mais il existe également une référence, datant de 1234, qui mentionne Gombaud de Lafite, abbé du monastère de Vertheuil, au nord de Pauillac.

Au 18ème siècle, le vin est devenu célèbre sous le nom de "Vin du Roi" lorsqu'il a reçu la haute approbation de Louis XV. Lafite a obtenu le statut de premier cru dans le classement de 1855, avec Château Latour, Château Margaux et Château Haut Brion. Ce classement, qui existe toujours, était basé sur la qualité et surtout les prix de l'époque.

Lafite exigeait le prix le plus élevé et était donc placé en tête de liste. En 1868, le baron James de Rothschild achète le Château Lafite. C'est à ce moment-là que le nom est devenu Lafite-Rothschild.

Malheureusement, le baron décède 3 mois après son achat mais en hommage, le millésime 1868 reçoit le prix le plus élevé du marché et reste un record pour tout le 19ème siècle.

La fin du 19ème siècle (crise du phylloxéra et du mildiou) et le début du 20ème siècle (mildiou et Grande Dépression) sont des périodes difficiles pour le Château Lafite-Rothschild. De plus, la deuxième guerre mondiale voit l'occupation par les Allemands, qui pillent les caves remplies de millésimes anciens. Mais à partir de 1945, le Château Lafite-Rotschild s'impose à nouveau comme l'un des principaux châteaux de Bordeaux.

Actuellement, le vignoble couvre 112 Ha et se compose de trois parcelles différentes. Les cépages utilisés sont : Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%) et Petit Verdot (2%). L'âge moyen des vignes est de presque 40 ans. Ils produisent également un second vin appelé "Carruades de Lafite". Les millésimes légendaires comprennent : 1847, 1848, 1870, 1899, 1900, 1928, 1929, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1959, 1961, 1982, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016 et plus récemment le millésime 2018.
