Probably consisting entirely of red Grenache and bottled last year, the 1945 Rivesaltes has a deep chestnut hue with a light tawny rim. It has an endearing nose with stewed oranges, camphor, woodbine and a touch of black currant, all well-defined considering its age. The palate has a medicinal entry with star anis, fennel, macerated dark cherries and dark plum. It has a pleasant bitter twist toward the rancio finish that just needs a little more depth, but otherwise this is a lovely mature Rivesaltes.
