The 1950 Rivesaltes from Chateau Prieure du Monastir del Camp, which was bottled in 2013, has a refulgent colour with a tawny rim. The nose is very well defined with orange zest, cumin, touches of salted liquorices and ripe strawberries - remarkably fresh and vital given its age. The palate is medium-bodied, quite cohesive but perhaps more linear than other bottles from Philippe Gayral, less oxidative and dare I say, more consumer friendly. As such, it does not quite possess the personality of its peers on the finish but it would serve as a perfect introduction to the delights of Vin Doux Naturels.
