Sourced from the family’s reserves, the 1961 is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Grenache Blanc and Gris. It has a strong oxidative nose with superb definition, quite like an old Verdelho Madeira with a touch of fieriness. The palate has a rancio quality with smoked walnut and a touch of black pepper. Again, there are touches of Verdelho here, with an elegant stem ginger infused finish that is nicely focused. This is old-fashioned Banyuls – and there is nothing wrong with that. Tasted December 2012.
