The Thunevin and Calvet 2010 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Trois Marie represents, exceptionally, unassisted Grenache (from Maury), raised in a single foudre. There is an infectious juiciness to its confitured strawberry and black raspberry fruit, with accents of licorice, wormwood, vanilla and dark chocolate lending striking and seductive counterpoint on a polished palate and profound, metaphorically dark yet vibrant finish. These grapes with this vinification have resulted in a polish, clarity and energy that the other wines from this estate in 2010 don’t achieve. (Of course, there is the difficulty engendered by localized hail in Lesquerde that influences certain other cuvees. But I suspect that the use of large cask is also significant.) This beauty should perform well at least through 2025.
