Robert Parker (91)

The Estate Reserve is a high-altitude blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (51%), Syrah (31%) and Merlot (18%) from mixed regions wine (Manara, Upper Galilee, 650 meters elevation; Ben Zimra, Upper Galilee, 830 meters elevation; and Judean Hills, 900 meters elevation). It was aged for 36 months in French oak (300 to 500-liter, 90% new). It's an interesting comparison with this and the lesser priced wines from Makura this issue. The Syrah gives this a darker set of flavors and a slightly funky aromatic. If the Merlot Barbera (also reviewed) seemed a bit "different" at times, this goes one step further, the Syrah dominating the aromatics and flavors on the finish. The oak seems better controlled here, but there's a hint of alcohol in the background at some points, although that mostly goes away. Your opinion of this will mostly be controlled by your reaction to its meaty, somewhat earthy flavor profile. Those who like it, will love the wine, and vice versa. It is constructed beautifully overall.
