Colour: full gold, so rather darker than Batch 6.
Nose: adios struck matches, bye-bye cabbage, and hello rocks, pebbles and sand! It’s kept the trademark sooty tones, but the rest is incomparably cleaner, more satisfying, and simply lovely. Orange cake, old musty cellar, bubblegum, marshmallows, old garage… I know, the combination sounds unlikely, but it’s not.
Mouth: almost perfect, with gingery bitter oranges, more mineral flavours, these kiwis, this leathery tea, the touches of tobacco and raisins (sweet pipe tobacco, when a little piece comes through the pipe), more oranges… Quality’s undoubtedly high.
Finish: quite long, sweet and creamy, tart, zesty, and yet pretty fat… This has substance. Peppery aftertaste, it even keeps playing with your lips.
Comments: work in progress indeed!
A soft and contemplative Kilkerran, a departure from the fiery explosions of recent distillery offerings. This dram dances on the tongue with a gentler rhythm, its sherry influence muted yet purposeful. The spirit bears a distinct resemblance to Laphroaig, though it whispers where the Islay powerhouse might roar—imagine the phenolic punch and maritime depth of Laphroaig, but cloaked in a velvety calm.
Nose
A tapestry of maritime airs and meaty undertones. The first waft conjures images of barbecue pork belly, laden with caramelized sugar, salt, and succulent fat. As the dram opens, a softer, briny breeze emerges, interwoven with delicate tropical florals and a faint antiseptic hum. The finale delivers a medley of green tropical fruits—unripe mango, papaya, and young coconut—offering a refreshing tartness against the savory backdrop.
Taste
The palate, medium-bodied yet impactful, unfolds with a restrained fruitiness. Stewed plums and citrus zest take center stage, accompanied by the faint caramelized tang of grilled tropical fruits. Salted mineral water glides alongside a hint of ginger spice, while herbal notes—tobacco, camphor, and a whisper of antiseptic—build intrigue and complexity. Soft yet satisfying, the dram maintains a balance that avoids overwhelming.
Finish
Charred fruit and salt linger long after the sip, with a subtle sherry funk weaving through the final moments. The smoke, never aggressive, tapers off gracefully, leaving a faint mineral and herbal echo that tempts another pour.
Summary: This Kilkerran channels a quieter confidence. It doesn’t shout, but its complexity unfolds with patience. A dram for moments of introspection, where even a whisper of flavor feels profound.
