I believe it’s good to put an official end to this madness with a private cask bottled for four friends, rather than with some superfluous brandola. Not that Springbank are doing much of that anyway… Colour: pale gold. Nose: mangos, Vicks VapoRub, tiger balm, new plastics, cranberries, charcoal, bandages, lemongrass. Typical and harmonious, whatever you may think. With water: unstoppable. You may call 202-456-1111, that’s the Anti-Maltoporn Brigade. No, don’t, it’s the White House. Mouth (neat): oh very good! But who added the mezcal? H, M, M, or J? Let’s say you take a jar and pour 1/3 proper white mezcal (joven), 1/3 manzanilla anada by the crazy Callejuelas, and 1/3 middle-aged ex-refill Caol Ila. Shake well, and there, you’re on. Now I agree buying a bottle of this, should that be possible, would be easier to do. In theory. With water: smoked lemons and plasticine, I buy that. Finish: long, waxier, smokier, with superb lemony notes and wee touches of grassy oils. Oh there, olive. Comments: wow, nothing to throw. Super well done, HMM&J. But between us, while no one’s listening, tell me who-the-hell added the mezcal?

Nose: A lovely older springer, classy and deep with a nice minerality to it: limestone, some citrus (mostly oranges, but touches of lemon), hessian, a bit herbal with quite some autumn leaves, hints of mint and herbs, as well as oil paint and a hint of peat and distant fruit. quite layered and complex…

Palate: Quite earthy on the start, the peat and soot are much stronger. Bitter and spiced with coffee beans, pepper, and dark bitter 90% chocolate, licorice, and lemon peel, ending on bitter earth and ashes.

Finish: Quite long, with an abundance of peat, and bitter coffee ground and wood.

Conclusion: A splendid whisky indeed. Don’t expect big sherry notes, this is indeed a refill barrel and it’s mostly about citrus fruit and peat/ soot and spices. Lovely stuff. Well done guys.

Whisky Notes (91)

Nose: top class. Slightly restrained but with all the right elements. Plenty of mineral notes, chalk, empty mussel shells. Add some lemons and oranges, olive oil and mastic, leafy touches and fresh canvas. Reminds me a bit of the early 18’s with the new label. Mouth: more intense now. Quite a sharp peaty edge, than mentholated notes, saltwater and pepper. Leafy notes. Coffee beans and subtle praline. Still some sweet lemon, tonic water and a hint of almonds. A little aniseed as well. Finish: long, more peat, with a little ginger and nutmeg.

We’ve had some excellent Springbanks recently and this is definitely in the first few seats. I believe all bottles are sold out, too bad.

Tasting Notes Words Of Whisky:
An absolute diamond of a whisky from Springbank.
Nose
Good god, yes! Delicious mature Springbank with a fantastic subtle sweetness and soft fruitiness, mainly of the citrus variety but also some stone fruits. There's a touch of tobacco, polymer, menthol and burlap too. A few wet pebbles as well.
Taste
A bit more sturdy and robust than the nose. Earthy peat, campfire smoke and gentle spices, as well as a hint of cappuccino. But there's a friendly sweetness here as well, with a tinge of fudge, but also bright yellow fruits. Seriously great stuff.
Finish
More of the above. Long.
