Nose: Dried fruits and cocoa powder, as well as chocolate truffles. Followed by caramel glazed red apples. Somewhat one-dimensional, but pretty mellow, especially at such a high percentage. Water brings out a touch of soy.
Taste: Here it shows its (relative) youth. A sherry bomb with lots of oomph. Sweet arrival with cherries, milk chocolate and some mint leaves. Soft notes of pepper. There’s a touch of pomelo. Water reveals a more syrupy, slightly fruitier side.
Finish: Drying with chocolate sweetness and a bit of lingering chili heat.
Score: 86
A satisfying Glenfarclas bottled in celebration of a remarkable milestone.
On March 26, Han van Wees was appointed Master of the Quaich. This very honorable title was only granted to a Dutch citizen for the third time. Especially for this occasion Glenfarclas bottled a beautiful barrel under the The Family Casks label. This Masters Selection was selected by Han van Wees and production manager Callum Fraser. It was a first fill sherry hogshead (no. 2777) with distillate from 2009. He was recently bottled with an age of nine years. There are only 327 bottles available with a barrel strength of 59.6%.
