Robert Parker (91)

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon treads a pleasant middle path between the 2014 (riper) and the 2015 (greener). Cassis and cocoa appear on the nose, followed by a crisp, medium-bodied, slightly grainy-textured wine in the mouth and a long, mouthwatering finish. Personally, I'd prefer more generosity and richness on the palate in the red wines, but there's no questioning the commitment to farming at this American-owned micro-estate.

Intense but very pure nose. This seems like essence of claret rather than full and bumptious. Very fresh. Note the low alcohol. This is my favourite of the three Cloudburst Cabernets I had a chance to taste with Will Berliner, owner of Cloudburst.

Decanter (96)

Rosebud, blueberry and cassis notes dominate at first, showing real purity to the Cabernet Sauvignon. As things power up, you get great streaks of chocolate, slate, mint and eucalyptus. As is typical with Cloudburst, you get a ton of nuanced complexity, and a whoosh of freshness boosted by a saline lick on the finish. A slow burn overall, getting more and more interesting and succulent as it stays in your mouth and the flavours unroll. Clever, confident winemaking in one of the longest harvests on record. Around 50% new oak, natural malolactic fermentation, no extended macerations. It's worth pointing out that the vines are still only 12 years old at this point.
