The 2014 Grand-Puy-Ducasse has a conservative, rather backward and tertiary nose that needs to demonstrate more fruit intensity. Pleasant enough, but not as memorable as its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, more weight than it demonstrated from barrel, although the second half is very linear and refuses to fan out. It cuts away a little short. Not bad, but there is still room for improvement.
The forthright cassis note is immediately appealing, then the rather bold tannic structure sneaks up on you and shows that this is a serious wine. Maybe not quite the power and length of the appellation’s top wines in 2014, but still an impressive wine.
Rene Gabriel rates this wine 16/20 points.
