Cropped from blue marl soils, the 2018 Savagnin Les Grandvaux is much more restrained, serious and mineral, combining volume and very good acidity, very much alive and elegant.
Les Dolomies owes its name to the fact that there are some dolomite stones composed of dolomite minerals (calcium magnesium carbonate, not to be confused with the Dolomite Mountains) in some of the vineyards. It's a small project from Céline Gormally in the small village of Passenans. She has some older vines and is replanting others from a total of six hectares, some in the village and some on the slopes under Château Chalon. The setup is quite unusual, as it's a rental agreement with an NGO called Terre de Liens, which owns the vineyards dedicated to promoting organic farming. She works organically and biodynamically. Her husband also helps with the work in the vineyards, and the wines are produced and aged in the basement of their house and in an adjoining building. We visited some of these very nice plots, which were full of life, wild flowers and herbs, and one of the vineyards was even full of wild strawberries!
