Lots of coagulated milk and intensely spicy clove character here, making this a unique wine from the outset. The acidity is very punchy, driving through stoney nuances and keeping all the citrus and green fruit taut and precise. Medium-bodied and medium-long.
The 2018 Ölberg Riesling GG offers a pure, fresh and slightly stony yet also fruity bouquet of a fully ripe Riesling. Charmingly round and fruity on the palate, this is a full-bodied, silky-textured, elegant and refined dry Riesling with character and a lingering ripe-fruit expression and stimulating grip that adds freshness but not unripeness. Tasted in May 2020.
Another one of those uncompromising funkily reductive noses that Kai Schätzel is famous for by now. A sharp intake of crushed green leaves shoots right through the olfactories. Eat your greens for adults: drink your greens, there’s even a hint of iodine. Lean (11.5% alcohol), mean, green and, in a sensory way, miles away from mainstream. Disciples of the school of spontaneous fermentation will worship it for its purity. (MS)
