2019 Domaine Marcel Deiss Rotenberg "La colline rouge" (93)
From rocky Jurassic limestone soils in a slightly northern-exposed cru above the Altenberg, the yellow-golden 2019 Rotenberg "La colline rouge" offers a pure but intense and concentrated bouquet of perfectly ripe and elegant (lemon) fruits (or chutney) intertwined with the iodine and flinty purity and crushed oolitic limestone. Lush, refined and very elegant on the palate, this is a silky, smooth and elegant, remarkably energetic and saline Engelgarten with fine tannins structuring the round and smooth texture and perfectly ripe fruit. This is a gorgeous Rotenberg, yet the best is yet to come. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022.
2019 Domaine Marcel Deiss Grasberg "La colline où pousse l'herbe" (95)
The 2019 Grasberg "La colline où pousse l'herbe" exhibits a dark golden-yellow color and a rich and concentrated, very intense and aromatic yet pure and finely spicy bouquet of stewed and dried apricots, whole wheat bread and some malty and white pepper notes. Lush and elegant on the palate, with concise acidity and fine bitters, this is a late-harvest style of Riesling that is luckily provided with fine tannins and delicate bitters on the long and complex, persistently salty finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022.
2018 Domaine Marcel Deiss Burg "Le vignoble féodal" (94)
From Keuper marl soils with gypsum, the 2018 Burg "Le vignoble féodal" offers a pure and flinty yet very rich and elegant bouquet of yellow plums (or mirabelle) aromas with concentrated but fresh citrus fruit and iodine aromas of crushed plates. Saline and crystalline on the palate, this is a rich and a bit sweet but piquant and grippy-finishing Burg with lemon bitters. Not yet flying but tight and promising. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022.
2019 Domaine Marcel Deiss Burlenberg "La Colline brûlée" (95)
The 2019 Burlenberg "La Colline brûlée" offers a fascinating, deep, pure, precise and concentrated but energetic bouquet with flinty and smoky, even crystalline notes. Full-bodied, rich and very elegant on the palate, this is a powerful but highly stimulating, juicy, saline and mouthwatering Pinot with fine, ripe tannins and beautifully clear and cleansing acidity that represents not only the marly limestone but also the more vivacious and nervous influence from the schistous and volcanic upper part of the cru in Bergheim. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022.
2021 Domaine Marcel Deiss Langenberg "La longue colline" (91)
The 2021 Langenberg, grown on granite, is a field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Pinot Noir. Dark rose petals hover above subtle plum fruit aromas on the subtle, tender nose. The palate is immediately bright, stony and clear as a bell. The directness of the stone is astonishing, imbuing yellow plum fruit with citrus brightness. This skips along with athleticism, coming to a medium, dry and lasting finish. (Bone-Dry)
2022 Domaine Marcel Deiss Gruenspiel "Le jeu des verts" (92)
The 2022 Rouge Gruenspiel is a Pinot Noir with a small portion of white Pinot varieties (around 5%). Gruenspiel hails from a site on heavy clay and marl, southerly exposed but not very elevated. The soils are water-retentive and sheltered, so this is an early-ripening site where potential alcohol must be carefully watched. Juicy, ripe cherry immediately signals generosity and a certain ease. Just a thin veil of smoke hovers in the distance. With air, aromatic pomegranate appears. The palate swishes with supple and fine tannin on its generous but still translucent body, always clinging to that touch of smoke—almost of smoked meat—in the background. The finish is drying yet smooth. (Bone-dry)
2022 Domaine Marcel Deiss Engelgarten "Le jardin des anges" (93)
The 2022 Engelgarten is grown behind the winery on alluvial gravel mixed with clay and marl. It is a field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Muscat. The wine is golden in the glass, and a floral note pitched between narcissus and lily hovers above ripe Reine Claude plum with lifted Mirabelle jelly. The palate comes in with fine creaminess and rounded, smooth fruit, edged by Mirabelle skin freshness. This flows generously, almost with emollience, but no fat. (Bone-Dry)
