The flagship estate of Stephan von Neipperg, the 2002 Canon-La-Gaffeliere outperforms its two sibling rivals, Clos de l’Oratoire and the rare as well as very expensive garage wine, La Mondotte. This offering exhibits a saturated blue/plum/purple color in addition to a big, spicy perfume of smoke, graphite, coffee, black currants, and new oak. The flavors add cocoa as well as an assortment of black fruits and licorice to the mix. With wonderful concentration and succulence as well as a moderately tannic finish, it will be at its finest between 2006-2020.
Attractive aromas of Indian spices, red berries and pressed flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins. It builds on your palate. Very well-made for the vintage.
Rene Gabriel rates this wine 17/20 points.
