Laurent-Perrier was founded in 1812 by André Michel Pierlot, though it had a different name at the time. Some 70 years later, cellar master Eugène Laurent took over the Champagne house. He and his wife Mathilde-Emilie Perrier were in charge. After Eugène died in 1887, the widowed Mathilde-Emilie gave the winery a new name: Veuve Laurent-Perrier & Cie. Her daughter eventually sold the Champagne house to Marie-Louise de Nonacourt in 1939. Despite the dire condition Laurent-Perrier was in and despite looming bankruptcy, the De Nonacourt family remained driven to invest time, love, and money in the Champagne house and successfully so! Laurent-Perrier soon became the leading company it still is today.
The vineyards are spread over the villages of Bouzy, Tours-Sur-Marne and Ambonnay. The three main champagne grape varieties are used: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. All of Laurent-Perrier’s 150 hectares are cultivated sustainably. This was officially recognized in 2018 with the Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne (SVC) certificate and the High Environmental Value (HEV) certificate. On top of that, they also pay attention to environmentally friendly product packaging and reducing gas and electricity consumption.
In the 1950s, Perrier was one of the first to use stainless steel tanks for fermentation. This allowed for easy regulation of the low temperature and for good preservation of the acidity. Each vineyard and each batch is fermented separately. The final blend is then assembled by cellar master Michel Fauconnet. Laurent-Perrier's style can be described as freshness, elegance, and purity. Out of the nine different champagnes that are produced, Alexandra Rosé and Grand Siècle are the absolute top cuvées. With the Ultra Brut cuvée, Laurent-Perrier was the first to introduce a champagne to the market in brut nature style, meaning with zero dosage.
It hasn’t always been an easy ride, but Laurent-Perrier has nevertheless grown into one of the best champagne houses and by now, several other prestigious wineries belong to the Laurent-Perrier group.En savoir plus
