Most 1985 Chateauneuf du Papes matured quickly, and in most cases did not achieve the heights of richness and complexity predicted when they were young. Pegau's 1985 is an exception. The color is still an opaque ruby/purple with no lightening at the edge. The nose resembles a 3- to 5-year-old wine, rather than one that is nearly 12. Its huge fruit, muscular, thick, full-bodied, corpulent personality, and stunning length make for a rich, powerful glass of Chateauneuf du Pape. The wine, however, while impressive because of its unctuous texture and thickness, is still unevolved and in need of several more years of cellaring.
