The 1996 Montevetrano is the product of a cold, rainy year and late harvest. Today it comes across as rather lean, without the explosiveness or density of the finest vintages. Dark fruit, mocha, espresso, earthiness and tobacco develop in the glass, but this remains a somewhat rough-around-the-edges, lean and slightly herbal Montevetrano.
