The 2018 (Achkarren) Schlossberg Spätburgunder GG offers a stunningly open but also deep and flinty/stony bouquet with notes of leaves and crushed volcanic rocks. On the palate, this is powerful and generous and more of a German-styled Spätburgunder than Pinot Noir. The wine has a generous body and well-structured juiciness yet not the finesse and stimulating freshness or brightness of the Kirchberg. The finish, however, is powerful and fresh. I am curious to taste the bottled wine in late August.
The dense blackberries and smoky oak are still working on each other at the moment, but as they slowly come together, this concentrated and highly structured pinot noir will gain in fascination. The very long finish is already beautifully poised.
