The 1997 Altenberg Grand Vin Bergheim is stupendous. It offers pure aromas of smoky minerals followed by a medium-to-full-bodied, fat, and dense core of concentrated fruit. Multiple layers of expansive, powerful, and rich red berries, minerals, poached pears, spices, and smoked bacon can be discerned in this deep wine. It is a regal, opulently-textured, and admirable long wine.
Very ripe and softly structured, showing apricot, mandarin orange and some noticeable sweetness. Very rich, with enough support, it has a subtle power that emerges on the finish. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Muscat, Sylvaner and Auxerrois.
