A strong candidate for the title of wine of the vintage in Chablis this year, the Raveneau family's 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp green apple, citrus zest, iodine, oyster shell and fresh hazelnuts. Full-bodied, taut and chiseled, it's incredibly taut and concentrated, with huge depth at the core, tangy acids and a long, penetrating, pungently saline finish. Might this turn out to be even better than the magical 2017? Time will tell, but this is clearly a masterful achievement.
On the, south-facing side to the left of the valley. Pale primrose in colour, with quite a firm nose held back by a little touch of sulphur. Then there is a wealth of classic fruit on the palate. The wine does indeed show a graceful ripeness, but neither heat nor heaviness. The finish once again is notably persistent. Very fine. The longer in the glass, the purer and more electric it becomes.
The 2019 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru has a strikingly intense bouquet of lemon peel, mint, linseed and grilled almonds, displaying wonderful definition and amplitude. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine line of acidity, powerful but so elegant. The way it fans out on the finish is thrilling. One of the top wines of the vintages.
