Pale lemon colour, the bouquet takes some searching out, but then it arrives, clearly richer than the premiers crus and with a little more oak. At the moment the wood is a little prominent, one of the two barrels being new. The fruit will work out in the end but this may take some time to marry.

Burghound (95)

More restrained aromas include those of a variety of floral elements that combine with notes of freshly cut apple, anise and a discreet hint of wood. The equally intense but much bigger, richer and more powerful flavors are shaped by a very firm acid spine on the super-saline and wonderfully long finale. This is a big, though not massive, Bâtard that should also age gracefully for a very long time. Even so, it could reasonably be approached after 7 to 8 years. If you can find it, treat yourself.

The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is the finest rendition of this cuvée that I've tasted at this address. Exhibiting aromas of pear, hazelnuts, bread dough, citrus oil, anise and dried white flowers, it's full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep and multidimensional core, racy acids and a long, resonant finish. While I often prefer Morey's Blanchots to his Bâtard, in 2019 the latter appears to have the edge—at least out of the gates.
