Robert Parker (95)

The 2021 Grands Échézeaux Grand Cru is deeper pitched and denser than the Echézeaux. Mingling aromas of wild berries and plums with notions of sweet spices, incense and rose petals, it's full-bodied, broad and textural, with an almost unctuous attack that segues into a layered mid-palate that's framed by sweet, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the long, sapid finish. This is always a wine built for the long haul, and the 2021 is no exception.

Jancis Robinson (18.50)

Higher yields here because part of the vineyard was protected from the frost by bougies (candles). Co-director Perrine Fenal describes Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux as more like cousins than brothers this year. Vines on average 30 years old. Yield 21.6 hl/ha. Bottled 17 March 2023. Total production 742 cases of 12.
Mid to light ruby. Darker fruited than the Échezeaux. Smells as I imagine wild raspberries might, with a light wood/cedary character adding a savoury aspect to the dark-red fruit. Firm, layered, paper-fine tannins give you something to bite on but they are still ineffably fine in texture. Sober, elegant, pure, dark restraint. Intense and yet has a modesty about it. Immensely long. (JH)

Jasper Morris (94)

A little paler, perhaps more evolved in colour, than the Echezeaux. The spice and the red fruit seeming in equal proportions at first sniff. The Grands Echezeaux comes across as more monolithic than the Echezeaux on first sight, much less giving in its bouquet. The raspberries on the palate are just that little bit darker, the pepper notably insistent. Brooding is the word, with good length and nicely interwoven acidity. Just a little hard to see exactly how this will develop at the moment. With time the wine seems to draw out further behind, suggesting that it is in a state of arrested adolescence.
