The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Fontenys wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums, peonies, warm spices, orange rind and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's sensual and concentrated, with lively acids and a long, resonant finish. This has turned out especially well.
A background touch of bourgeon de cassis isn't enough to completely overshadow the aromas of spiced plum, anise, cherry and iron-inflected earth - even so, I would decant this first if you're going to try a bottle young. The super-sleek, delineated and tautly muscular flavors retain a degree of refinement that borders on finesse, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, highly complex and long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This may better harmonize but at the moment it's a bit awkward.
