The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru les Angles had reached 12 degrees natural alcohol by September 28 and so Louis Boillot went ahead and picked this vineyard. No point in waiting. It has plenty of fruit on the nose: mint-tinged raspberry preserve and smudged strawberry. The palate has good substance with raspberry and blackberry notes, fine structure and what you might call a “solid” finish. There’s a bit of brio about this Volnay that I like.
Sweet red fruit - slightly candied, with a violet character. Then a very wet earth sort of note on the palate, veering into mouldiness. Tannins are quite dominant on the finish too.?
