A Camille Giroud 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Crais (from below the route nationale, just south of Les Justices) smells of rhubarb and smoked meat, which anticipate its tart, saline, smoky palate impression. A beef bouillon-like undertone, chalk, and cherry pit bitterness add some depth to a long, vigorous finish. This is lean in an athletic, attractive way, not to mention vintage typical even if not terribly complex.
