The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru is a success, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of cherries, cassis, candied peel and incense, framed by some spicy new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerful, with satiny tannins, an ample core of fruit, succulent acids and a long, oak-inflected but persistent finish. This shows considerable promise.
The aromas of cherry, licorice, cinnamon and sandalwood are enticing in this red, translating to fruit and spice flavors matched by dense tannins. Still, this is lacy and supple, with a lingering aftertaste of baking spice and macerated cherry.
