Robert Parker (95)

Given the performance of his relatively young vines in this largely reddish Marnes marl site, it’s small wonder that Ganevat’s 2010 Cotes du Jura Chardonnay Les Grands Teppes Vieilles Vignes – from vines some of which were planted in 1919 on – delivers a profoundly impressive performance. Buddleia, honeysuckle, and heliotrope waft with headily sweet allure, backed by apricot and lime that then inform an expansive, richly textured palate which doesn’t betray its 14.5% alcohol in any heat or roughness. Deep nuttiness wells up as this opens, and, along with mouthwateringly maritime mineral notes, perfectly complements its succulence of fruit and floral wreath, while a vibrant current of citricity serves for a finish that tingles and invigorates as it grips. It was fascinating to experience different vine selections – featuring among other things, as Ganevat emphasizes, different berry-size – as reflected in the different lots that were to inform this future bottling and whose composite character I have attempted to capture in my tasting note. I could scarcely tear myself away from the fascination and seduction of the empty glass between samples! I suspect the finished product will merit at least a decade of attention.
