Domaine Clos Rougeard is located in the heart of the Loire region, in the town of Saumur-Champigny. The winery has its origins in the 17th century. The Foucault brothers were in charge of the winery for a long time, but since 2017, it has been in the hands of the Bouygues family.
The vineyard area of 11 hectares is spread over 20 different plots. The terroir is characterized by clay and slate. The farming has been done organically for many years, resulting in very healthy vines. And because the vines are so healthy, they can become very old. The winery has several vines with an age of up to 100 years.
In the cellar, interventions are kept to as few as possible, so that the wines are a pure expression of the terroir and the grape. For example, the fermentation is started by natural yeasts, the wines are hardly clarified, and the use of sulfite is kept to a minimum. But the real secret, according to Clos Rougeard, is time. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to oak barrels for a minimum period of 2 years. After that, the wines are bottled and stored for a few more years in the 7-meter-deep tuff rock cellar.
The portfolio consists of three red wines and one white wine. The red wines are made from Cabernet Franc. These are Le Clos, Les Poyeux and Le Bourg. The white wine is made from Chenin Blanc and is marketed under the name Brézé. All four cuvées are characterized by structure, complexity and mineral notes. Lastly, all wines have fantastic aging potential.
Clos Rougeard is certainly one of the best in the field! It is a winery that is very popular among connoisseurs. The best vintages are: 2010, 2014 and 2015.En savoir plus
