Antinori’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne is loaded with super-ripe dark cherries, plums, incense, hard candy, kirsch, tobacco and smoke. A rich, layered Brunello, the 2008 comes across as a bit forced in the cellar, with copious French oak and a level of sweetness that is distracting. Pian delle Vigne remains a bit of a work in progress within the Antinori portfolio.
A wine with chocolate and hazelnut character on the nose and palate. Full body with chewy tannins and a slightly extracted finish. Outstanding fruit underneath it all.
