An exclusive release of 1,812 bottles, the La Madonnina 2017 Viator is all Syrah from the warm and sun-drenched coast of Tuscany. This area of Bolgheri is home to a growing number of celebrated Syrahs, and the grape continues to deliver promising results. As is the case with the other wines from this newish estate, I'm not a fan of the lavish use of oak. That said, Syrah is perhaps better positioned to withstand it, thanks to those naturally robust aromas of dark fruit, spice and bacon fat. This wine sits heavy in the glass with a dark and impenetrable appearance and offers some sweet oak flavors along with an extra dose of blackberry preserves and bitter chocolate. It's a woody Syrah to saddle up to a big flank steak over the fire.
Rich garnet. On the nose it's open and ripe, cherry compote, rich plums and slightly peppery undertone. On the palate rich and dark fruit, slightly malty, very ripe fruit, perceptible use of wood, sweet tannins, sedate on the back palate, approachable now.
