The 2012 Bolgheri Rosso (50% Merlot, 30% Syrah and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in oak for ten months) opens to soft layers of cherry syrup and sweet fruit embedded within the wine’s rich texture. The Syrah component is 10% higher in 2012 and you can definitely identify lingering tones of smoked bacon and white pepper that are characteristic of that grape variety. This is a fine effort.

I was absolutely impressed with this new set of releases from Cinzia Merli and consulting enologist Luca D’Attoma. The biggest surprise, however, is the 2011 Scrio (100% Syrah) that embraces the warmth of the vintage with impeccable precision and elegance. So much attention in the past has been paid to Messorio and Paleo, but the 2011 vintage finally sees Scrio in the spotlight.
