The 2015 Tinata represents a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache with fruit grown in the southern part of Coastal Tuscany near the beachside resort town of Capalbio. This Rhône-inspired Tuscan blend is aged (70%) in barrique for 16 months and the rest goes into egg-shaped cement tanks. Some 6,430 bottles were produced. This lovely wine offers rich texture and depth with medium to full-bodied layers of dark fruit. Black currant and summer cherry are followed by smoke, spice and chocolate. This warm vintage shows extra concentration and richness.
Bright purple color in the glass. The nose offers tons of soaked blue fruit, such as blueberries. Lavender perfume, bay leaves, vanilla and cloves, too. Medium to full body with lots of essence-like fruit and a ton of floral and herbal flavors, which carry right through to the long yet mineral finish.
Following the 2014 vintage, the 2015 Tinata release came from an earlier harvest and season that was reasonably even-keeled. I tasted the 2015 in a vertical from 2008-2021 in August 2024. Here is a more powerful expression of Tinata, with broad-shouldered, muscular tannins that are firm, a bit sappy, and compact. Dark berry fruits mingle with wild herbs, mocha, and sandalwood through the expressive and mineral-laced finish. Winemaker Jean Hoefliger met the Webber family, owners of Monteverro, in 2003 at Newton in Napa Valley. The winery is in Capalbio, in the Tuscan Maremma, about a mile from the sea as the crow flies. The estate harbours 24.28 hectares of vines on eroded stony soils, much like the round river rocks of the Rhône Valley. The in-house winemaker is Matthieu Taunay, and Jean Hoefliger has served as a consultant since 2008, the first vintage. The winery is a state-of-the-art facility, allowing for stainless steel, concrete egg, and barrel fermentation. The Tinata is a unique blend for this region of Tuscany and is typically 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache each year. Aged in roughly 80% new French oak for 16 months. The Syrah remains in the barrel the entire time, but the Grenache goes up to concrete tanks halfway through ageing to avoid the oxidative potential of the grape and keep it fresh and lively, layering that quality to the blend.
