Made for the first time and not yet accepted as Grosses Gewächs, the 2018 Steinriese Spätburgunder (GG) is sourced from a particular plot in the Oberbergen Bassgeige 1er cru. The vineyard is very high in altitude (at 300-350 meters above sea level) and is characterized by the high content of iron oxide and even lime in the volcanic terroir. This gives a very clear, fresh and iodine-tinged bouquet of wild red berries that is very reductive in its youth but pretty sexy and stylish, with algal notes on the nose. On the palate, this is a silky-textured, fresh and highly finessed Pinot Noir with great tension and juicy concentration. The finish is tight, fresh, salty and full of energy and tension. I had never heard about this vineyard before, but this is Friedrich Keller's most exciting Pinot of the 2018 vintage. Highly promising.
