From black volcanic soil and aged for 18 months in French barriques (45% of which are new), Keller's 2020 Eichberg Oberrotweil Spätburgunder GG shows deep, intense, concentrated and quite-open dark fruit. Powerful and distinctive, yet juicy, enormously vital and saline, this is a still restless and robust but venerable Pinot Noir whose first French clones were planted in 1994. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.
Fresh berries and pomegranate fade to make room for a rich, savoury and cool herbal core. Elegantly textured bitterness – and a bit of what feels like inclusion of stems – come together with supple red fruit in quiet, poised refinement. Still somewhat closed but it will come around. (PS)
