The 1997 Altenberg Grand Vin Bergheim is stupendous. It offers pure aromas of smoky minerals followed by a medium-to-full-bodied, fat, and dense core of concentrated fruit. Multiple layers of expansive, powerful, and rich red berries, minerals, poached pears, spices, and smoked bacon can be discerned in this deep wine. It is a regal, opulently-textured, and admirable long wine.
A bright white, just off-dry, with peach juice, black licorice, candied orange peel and papaya. Silky in texture and weight, with well-integrated acidity and a lingering hint of smoke on the finish.
