Tasted blind at the Burgfest annual tasting, Bessin's 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur has a rich and opulent bouquet indicating a late picking. It feels honeyed and generous although it is missing the detail of its peers. The palate is balanced with crisp acidity, finally (belatedly?) demonstrated precision and tension with a dash of fresh lemongrass toward the concentrated finish. Fine, if a couple of steps behind its fellow Valmurs at present.
?There is just enough wood present to remark upon but not so much to mask the still tight oyster shell, citrus and green fruit aromas. I very much like the intensity of the bigger and richer flavors that still manage to retain a lovely sense of refinement while delivering strikingly good depth and length on the palate staining finish. Bessin rarely misses with his Valmur and the excellent 2014 is continuing proof of that.
