Monopole. Cask sample.
Quite a deep purplish crimson. Round and fruity within a framework of tannin. Long and builds towards the end in an admirable way. (JR)
The 2022 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru is very ripe and almost ostentatious on the nose with its plush red plum and fresh figgy scents. Maybe just a little over-ripe? The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, saturated tannins. This is a "big" Volnay, with plenty of "rondeur" with a welcome pinch of cracked black pepper enlivening the finish. If you're not bothered about elegance, this may suit you, though I might err toward the excellent 2021.
This is also brooding yet quite ripe with its blend of liqueur-like dark berries, cherry, kirsch and a pretty array of spice elements. The rich, generously proportioned and caressing medium weight flavors that are finer if less powerful on the dusty, serious and very firm finale. This needs more depth so patience suggested.
A full rich purple, with a more succulent fruit at first, but the fruit is a mite darker too. This is a solid, relatively full-bodied Volnay, with adequately ripe but perhaps not especially fine tannins. Drink from 2029-2035.
