The dark ruby-colored 1999 Pommard Grand Clos Des Epenots, from the estate's 8-hectare monopole, has fresh black fruit and sweet oak aromas. Loads of blackberries, cassis, and road tar flavors can be found in its deep, powerful, and muscular character. It has excellent concentration yet a rugged, tannic, firm personality. If the fruit gains the upper hand with final racking pre-bottling, this wine will ultimately merit an outstanding rating. If not, its structure could dominate.
Very impressive. Big and deep, a complex Pinot that delivers power yet elegance. Much black fruit character, superbly ripe tannins, and a firm structure that's backed by the minerally terroir.
