The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château is more floral and demonstrative, bursting with aromas of peony, rose petal, citrus rind, warm spices, grilled meats and espresso roast, with some berry fruit in a supporting role. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and ample, with supple structuring tannins that are largely concealed by a succulent core of fruit. While the Clos du Château is planted with Pinot Droit on SO4 rootstock, Liger-Belair reliably renders his most charming, sensuous village bottling from this site.
Monopole vineyard behind the chateau.
Intensely sweet red-cherry fruit and lots of spice but seems like fruit not oak spice. Fragrant and jumping out of the glass. Cherry pie. A little bit toasty on the palate but it is the pure fruit that sings. The spice is slight, the oak swallowed. More savoury and spiced on the palate with a sour-cherry finish. Tannin texture is less silky than on La Colombière but super-fine-grained. (JH)
