Bursting with aromas of rose petals, orange rind, peonies, spices and wild berries, the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is medium to full-bodied, layered and enveloping, with velvety tannins, exquisite precision despite the warm vintage and a pungently perfumed finish. This is a brilliant Amoureuses in the making.ge.
Amoureuses is not the most powerful wine but ages as long as Bonnes Mares. The drinking window opens earlier, suggests Christophe Roumier, citing Henri Jayer’s maxim that if a wine is good in youth it will be good for all of its life. Around 60% whole bunch. Barrel sample.
Much the prettiest and most fragrant of Roumier’s wines so far tasted. Wild red fruits and just a hint of roses. Pretty but not showy. Incredibly moreish while also having a lightness of touch. Tannins are a little stony and there is an overall stoniness that does not diminish the fragrance. Firm on the palate but in a subtle way. Intense without weight. Glorious length and harmony with a sour freshness of cherry at the very end. (JH)
