Unwinding in the glass with notes of wild berries, spices, orange rind and plums, the 2019 Volnay Les Grands Champs is medium to full-bodied, with a firmer, more youthfully austere profile than the demonstrative Retraits, framed by powdery tannins and lively acids and concluding with a saline finish. This will reward a little patience.
Camille’s second vintage of this wine, made with whole bunch vinification as was the 2018. Glowing purple with a wonderful, excitable nose, very much the white pepper style, rather than vegetal, a significant mouthful and with waves of flavour. More whole bunch in style than Volnay now but that will not be true later. Great potential here.
