The inaugural release this new cuvée for Bérêche, the 2013 Grand Cru Mailly-Champagne is showing superbly, bursting from the glass with aromas of Meyer lemon, dried white flowers, orange rind, honeycomb and subtle hints of coniferous forest. Medium to full-bodied, racy and incisive, this is searingly intense, girdled by brisk acids and concluding with a chalky finish. This derives from a site characterized by deep clay soils over chalk bedrock.
First vintage of a new wine from a village dominated by three big co-ops.
Opulent, but with finesse. Very telluric (related to the earth), says Raphaël Bérêche, who mentions the vineyard’s red clay. He works with Claude Bourguignon – and the ubiquitous Pedro Parra of Chile!
