Chapoutier makes no bones about the fact that he prefers his 1996 Cote Roties to his 1995s. His 1996 Cote Rotie is a tannic wine with a saturated ruby/purple color. It enjoyed six weeks of maceration, resulting in a vin de garde Cote Rotie with plenty of pepper, Asian spices, soy, and black fruits in the nose and flavors. The tannin level is high in this medium-bodied, concentrated, backward wine, and patience will be required.
